Licensed Massage Therapist 23
was 40 years old when I entered massage school in 1990. Prior to that I
was working with horses, pretty physical stuff. I figured I couldn't do
that forever. Owning a horse or two is fun. Tending to a small herd is
lot of work.
First day of massage school I find out that carpal tunnel syndrome is a
hazard for massage therapists.
Now I was from the sticks. I didn't even know what carpal tunnel
Obviously it is a hazard for lots of professions. From musicians, to
hair dressers, to assembly line workers, computer programmers, grocery
baggers. The list goes on and on. Anyway...
In massage school there were classes in anatomy and physiology,
diseases, muscle studies, and a lot more. Those were taught by

We were not

Well, years ago I was having numbness in my own overworked hands from
long hours of doing massage at a big resort . The stretches I learned
in massage school weren't working...
In fact they made my problem worse.
I thought I knew a lot about carpal tunnel syndrome. Turns out I didn't
So I searched everywhere. Books, magazines, the internet. I was
desperate for answers.
I got a lot of info on who gets it, how much it costs in loss
productivity and a bunch of statistics I didn't care about. There was
also quite a bit on how to use a computer ergonomically.
There was also
misinformation mixed in with truth. Many websites just copied other
websites - misinformation and all.
There were some stretches. The most helpful thing I got was using ice.

There had to be a better way.
Finally the breakthrough came. From a most unusual source.
An article on the Internet. Members of a rowing team were developing
hands. They found relief by rubbing above the wrist with their thumbs.
But my poor thumbs were already overworked.
Also they missed a
part of what needed to be done.
So I developed a
technique to work on myself without using my hands. And
worked beautifully. No longer did I need to ice.
I Had Another Problem
I worked with my arms chest high or
my hands would get numb

So I did more of my technique and my hands and forearms were
“happy” until I raised my arms again.
False Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
I couldn’t figure it out. Until…
A continuing education massage instructor casually mentioned that this muscle in the chest could
produce a false carpal tunnel syndrome.
I figured out a way to treat that muscle myself. Just
a few minutes. I never had that
unbelievable thing is, I went and looked back at my anatomy books and
books I had gotten on carpal tunnel, and not one of them, not one
that that muscle could produce a false carpal syndrome.
And that's not the
only place that can produce False Carpal Tunnel Syndromes.
More on that later,
first let me tell you. I'm 66 years old and my hands feel

Hi Hilma, I'm

2nd Doctor (the Rheumatologist) said stay on the pain medicine
(meloxicam) and also put me on pennsaid. Didn't have RA. Went back,

said I had Carpel Tunnel and needed surgery immediately,
before more damage occurs.
That wasn't going to happen. Stopped taking all the meds. Went on line
to find alternate solution. And there you were. I don't use ice packs
like I did every night and sleep better. And the pain has
stopped. Still have some numbness in the middle finger. I
think if I massage more often, and exercise like I did in the
beginning, this will go away. Especially the massage on my arm and neck.
so much for your help. Looking forward for more. You're smarter than
